Investment of Funds

Northland is proud of its ability to assist clients with proper and prudent investment of their funds. As a licensed broker-dealer, Northland has direct and instant access to an array of investment vehicles and we can eliminate the "middle man" by purchasing investments directly for a customer's account. For municipal accounts, we can offer institutional investments including, but not limited to, treasury securities, high-grade commercial paper, taxable general obligation bonds and federal agency securities. In addition, Northland Securities can offer proprietary offerings not available to the market as a whole.

We ensure that all investments are permitted under statutory requirements, and are also in accordance with the issuer's investment policy, with the goal of maximizing investment earnings without compromising security and cash flow. We are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).

When investing bond proceeds, we work closely with the architect/general contractor or construction manager to develop a construction draw schedule and combine that with any other expenditures the client may realize during construction. Based on that schedule, we advise the client on the term, investment type and interest rate that would be most appropriate. All investments are made at the direction of the client and are followed by confirmation statements and monthly account statements.

We also work closely with bond counsel to determine if the structure of an issue will qualify for the arbitrage exemption by the Internal Revenue Service or if the investment of bond proceeds needs to be yield restricted. This extra step can significantly impact the amount of investment earnings a client will be able to realize.
